National Urban Development Policy (NUDP) – Kenya (2011/2012).

National Urban Development Policy (NUDP) – Kenya (2011/2012).

Between June 2011 and May 2012, we played a key role in the development of the National Urban Development Policy (NUDP)—now officially recognized as Sessional Paper No. 6 of 2016—under the guidance of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Local Government (Urban Development Department).

This landmark policy was designed to provide a comprehensive framework for managing Kenya’s rapid urbanization and guiding sustainable urban growth. Our involvement included the design and facilitation of the policy preparation process, nationwide stakeholder engagement, data collection, and drafting of the policy document. We also contributed to comparative research on international best practices, including a case study in Curitiba, Brazil.

The project also fed directly into the development of the Urban Areas and Cities Act (2011), one of Kenya’s key legal instruments for urban governance. Our contribution strengthened urban development discourse in Kenya and helped shape the national direction in managing cities and towns, making this project a vital reference point for urban planners, government agencies, and development partners in Kenya.
