Affordable Housing in Kenya: How to Apply for New Units in Nairobi and Nakuru.

Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme: Homes for All at Fair Prices

In a bold move to bridge the housing gap and enhance homeownership among Kenyans, the Government of Kenya (GOK) has committed to delivering 500,000 affordable homes under the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP). The initiative, led by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development (SDHUD) under the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development, and Public Works (MTIHUD&PW), aims to provide quality homes equipped with supporting infrastructure using innovative funding mechanisms and partnerships with the private sector.

How the AHP Works.

The AHP is designed to promote collaboration between the government and private sector developers. The government provides serviced land for housing developments, while strategic partners from the private sector fund and implement the construction of the housing units.

The first flagship project under the AHP was completed in October 2020 at Park Road, Nairobi, delivering 1,370 housing units. The high demand for these units confirmed the urgent need for more affordable homes across Kenya. As a result, new developments are now underway in:

  • Starehe and Shauri Moyo, Nairobi.

  • Bondeni, Nakuru Municipality.
